{"id":19142,"date":"2022-05-27T16:08:10","date_gmt":"2022-05-27T16:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pdihc.com\/?p=19142"},"modified":"2026-05-29T15:29:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T15:29:04","slug":"monkeypox-cases-increasing-globally-and-in-the-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pdihc.com\/monkeypox-cases-increasing-globally-and-in-the-u-s\/","title":{"rendered":"Monkeypox Cases Increasing Globally and in the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PDI is actively monitoring the monkeypox situation as news continues to become available. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/index.html\">Monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious viral illness<\/a> that has recently been reported in several countries.\u00a0 There are also emerging cases within the United States.\u00a0 Since early May 2022<sup>1<\/sup>, small clusters of monkeypox have been reported in the United Kingdom and other countries that don\u2019t typically see the disease. This disease is caused by the monkeypox virus and is usually seen within Central and Western Africa.<sup>1<\/sup> Cases outside of Africa are typically caused by travel exposure or close contacts with travelers to Africa.<sup>1<\/sup> The first case in the U.S. was reported in Massachusetts on May 18<sup>th <\/sup>after the individual returned from Canada.<\/p>\n<p>As the information around monkeypox continues to evolve, facilities should take the opportunity to ensure that proper infection prevention practices are in place. Many products in our portfolio of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pdihc.com\/environment-of-care-products\/\"><strong>Sani-Cloth\u00ae disinfectants<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0have an Emerging Viral Pathogen claim and <strong>are effective against Monkeypox<\/strong>.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Transmission from Humans<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Human-to-human transmission of the monkeypox virus occurs through close contact with large respiratory droplets from an infected individual, through direct contact with open lesions or body fluids, and through contact with surfaces\/clothing that have been contaminated with lesion fluid.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prevention in Healthcare<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prevention measures for healthcare facilities include:<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Implementing a combination of standard, contact, and droplet precautions with airborne precautions added, if necessary<\/li>\n<li>Proper use of personal protective equipment to include:\n<ul>\n<li>Disposable gloves and gown for patient contact<\/li>\n<li>NIOSH-certified N95 (or comparable) respiratory device for long duration exposures<\/li>\n<li>Use of eye protection (e.g., face shields or goggles) if medical procedures may lead to splashing or spraying of a patient\u2019s body fluids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Proper hand hygiene after all contact with an infected patient and\/or their environment during care. <a href=\"https:\/\/pdihc.com\/products\/patient-care\/sani-hands-instant-hand-sanitizing-wipes\/\">Sani-Hands\u00ae Instant Hand Sanitizing Wipes<\/a> are an ideal hand hygiene solution for staff, visitors, patients or residents<\/li>\n<li>Proper disposal of contaminated waste (e.g., dressings) in accordance with facility-specific guidelines for infectious waste<\/li>\n<li>Proper care when handling soiled laundry (e.g., bedding, towels, personal clothing) to avoid contact with lesion material; do not shake or otherwise aerosolize infectious particles<\/li>\n<li>Proper handling of used patient-care equipment to prevent contamination of skin and clothing; ensure used equipment surfaces have been cleaned with PDI\u00a0<strong>Sani-Cloth\u00a0<\/strong>disinfectants and reprocessed appropriately.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure procedures are in place for cleaning and disinfecting environmental surfaces in the patient care environment.\u00a0\u00a0 Many <strong>Sani-Cloth <\/strong>disinfectants are considered effective against the Monkeypox virus as they have the EPA Emerging Viral Pathogen claim.<sup>2<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PDI is actively monitoring the monkeypox situation as news continues to become available.
